Something about the site of Kanye West standing next to Donald Trump looking like a simpleton a few weeks back has gnawed at me. But I found the positive even in that- reflecting more frequently on the period when leading hip hop artists actually had something constructive to say about current events rather than just chasing down photo ops. Run DMC gave youngsters this simple yet poignant insight 35 years ago and it still holds up today:
If you really think about it, times aren’t that bad; The one that flexes with successes will make you glad; Stop playing, start praying you won’t be sad; Its like that, and that’s the way it is.
When you feel you failed sometimes it hurts; For a meaning in life is why you search; Take the bus or the train, drive to school or the church; Its like that and that’s the way it is.
Imagine that. The hard core rappers of the day encouraged kids to look on the bright side when times got rough and to find support and answers in school and in church. We really were that good before. Surely we can be again- even in these tough times.
