If you have just a handful of these people in your life consider yourself very lucky. But don’t ask for more than that because I can promise you that you will not get it. Those people are your true friends- those bona fide ride or die brothers from another mother or sisters from another mister that you know are down with you and for you no matter what. Even when you are wrong they’ll argue with you like hell but they will not break ranks.
Why? Because you will crawl through hell with them in gasoline soaked draws if they needed you to and you bet your life they’d lay down in rush hour traffic for you if they had to.
Every story of ride or die friends is unique and special but a common theme is these bonds tend to form when people find themselves in the same space and time being challenged in a life-altering way. Military friends often have a bond like that.
For me, I was blessed with my ride or die partners when I was a kid in law school. We studied together and suffered together. We partied together for hours and then debated for even longer. In the two decades since our paths first crossed, we’ve seen each other through divorces, buried our mothers, kicked cancer square in the ass, and worked our way through our individual life journeys without ever losing track of each other. That is nothing but God winking at you. When you think you are taking a beating, God reminds you of your friends and winks at you, asking “Remember D and Roni?” And you answer “Yeah, I do” and then you smile and just say “Thank you.”
A ride or die is a special gift so never take it for granted, my friends. Wherever you got yours, take them with you in your heart everywhere you go- and they will never let you feel alone. So throw some love their way today whether its been a while or just a week. Godspeed.
