No disrespect to the good people out there working to draw attention to the scourge of police violence against black citizens, but the greatest violence being done in America today is to the institution of truth and the facts that form its foundation. And because our society has wandered so far away from truth as a prerequisite for a mainstream public forum to gain prominence, our governance is losing its efficacy.
When people do not know what facts are and what the truth is, they cannot determine their own best interest, much less vote in their own best interests. Our examination of this dynamic in our nation can start at the top and stay at the top.
The man serving as President of the United States believes that The National Enquirer is a credible news source that is worthy of a Pulitzer Prize because, as he put it: “They got OJ! They got Edwards and now they got this!” The “this” he was referring to was the election season “bombshell” story linking the father of Texas Senator Ted Cruz to the assassination of President Kennedy. And this man was elected President three months after such a ridiculous public utterance.
He has had the privilege of wealth his entire life, attended elite educational institutions and has had access to the very best of everything- including public information. And after all those advantages he relies on super market rags to educate him on what is going on in the world.
Trump and millions upon millions of Americans read and believe Enquirer headlines like “Jeb Bush snorts cocaine on the night his father became President!” and “Clinton sex romp caught on tape!” Yet, he complains bitterly about being the victim of “fake news” stories planted to discourage his supporters.
Those “fake news” stories he squealed about include reports of Russian connections with former top Trump aides Paul Manifort and Michael Flynn- both proven to be true as their “resignations” followed soon after the stories.
He and millions more listen to and propagate stories from the insane and delusional Alex Jones “InfoWars” program where he has insisted that the Sandy Hook mass shooting that took the lives of twenty innocent children was a hoax and that the government has a secret machine that creates weather catastrophes on demand.
So while it was a bizarre moment in television history, it was no surprise when Kellyanne Conway introduced the brand new concept to the world “alternative facts.” She unleashed this beauty when confronted by an exasperated news reporter about flagrant lies being repeated by President Trump and his press secretary Sean Spicer (a.k.a. Porky Pig) about the size of his inauguration crowd. As if that weren’t a stupid enough subject for the leader of the free world to be obsessing over, he and his team had to up the ante by dispensing with the most essential element of governance and journalism in one shot by shitting out the concept of “alterantive facts.”
In a 1st world, free market, democratic republic, we have to agree that 2 + 2 = 4 if we have any prayer of surviving and thriving. We cannot be so committed to combat and attack that we have debates over whether 2 + 2 = 5. Trump and his minions have condemned facts and truth to death by public stoning and they have a deranged mob of partisan hacks and conspiratorial lunatics masquerading as journalists helping them carry out the gruesome execution.
Those of us that are sane and engaged have to step in and stop them while facts and truth are still breathing and can recover. We have to find our way to a place where we agree on facts but fight over what they mean and what policy prescriptions are the appropriate remedy or response. We have to get everybody out of leadership who thinks that it is ok to argue that 2 + 2 = 5 strictly for political purposes. We have to smash the mics and break the cameras of those who know that selling 2 + 2 = 5 makes so much more money than 2 + 2 = 4 that they have elected to normalize and propagate the wrong calculation. In the end, we need to advance the ideal that Fact Lives Matter and we all have to play a role in saving them.
